THESIS

Il museo dell'Acropoli

Access to the sacred site and pathways

The stones are not strictly related to an archeology museum, they are put back on the path of what was originally considered the way of the Acropolis. The choice of stone of different pigmentations is a reference to the draft of the re-created routes from Pikionis project in the century before as such charming material because of color, it perfectly evokes the innovative imagination and the ability of Phidias to decorate Parthenon.

Project idea

There is a declared hierarchy between the various surrounding hills and the Acropolis and that is what characterizes the balance between what can stay within these walls and what needs to be outside, but be constantly perceptible. The Acropolis consolidated picture defense has been the node around which the project is developed. Only sign recognizable as post-dated compared to the remains of the original composition are two walls that embrace the entrance to the museum built entirely underground.

Inside the museum

The substantial stimulus to which undergoes the visitor is the hidden object. The entrance of the museum in fact is not openly displayed, but you notice the surface a wall declaring the presence of something. Only approaching to this wall, given the non-orthogonal to the arrival path, you can sense a scale, only medium with a different space from the one which would suggest the Acropolis.

Structurally

The museum can be considered a big box inside which are enclosed in turn two exhibition boxes with glass walls. The concrete structure is in fact going to be built in the Acropolis ground, but to recreate the impression given by the excavation in the two exhibition halls, is created in the space between the outer box and the inner one, a wall of reinforced earth to serve as a scenic backdrop to the display of statues.

Exhibition

The exhibition is meant to keep subdued lighting throughout the museum. The only sources of light are aimed to illuminate the works.

In fact growing all in the underground museum area is devoid of natural light. The lighting of the exhibition rooms is reflected by the works ones.

Eternal site

The solution proposed as an alternative to the cabins present today in the area is a box system that still identify as construction facilities, but maybe not disturb the visitor's eye. These boxes are structurally modular, composed of wooden pillars resting on a wooden platform, which itself lies on reinforced concrete beams. The cover of these boxes is entirely of wood but with a difference between the part that gives towards the area accessible to the visitor. For promoting aeration the walls towards the inside of the yard are composed only by wooden slats which permit the passage of air and dust outside, while the walls facing the scenic areas have a tamponade of MDF wooden panels with coating turn of wood strips that become necessary sessions or base for the exposure of didactic-explanatory panels. Peculiarity of these structures is the immediate reversibility and ecological sustainability of the material used.

Logo

Following the main lines of the golden rectangle construction, they will spontaneously draw the initials "A" and "M" are in fact the acronym for the Acropolis Museum.

Invitation to reflection

The intention of the project is to be not invasive to the immediate perception of the Acropolis, but deep in the observer's consciousness, to break that absolute penetration ratio of the city and its territory which formed the raison be in Athens. The intent is to keep alive the landscape of ruins, fragments of views and memories of looks, with the knowledge to live re-enactment in the present.
